Subterranean Ecology comprises a highly qualified team committed to scientific excellence and best practice in environmental services. In addition to our core staff we have an established and wide ranging network of Research Associates and aligned specialists and taxonomists in state museums, universities and other research institutions across Australia and internationally.


Dr Stefan Eberhard BSc MSc PhD

Director and Senior Principal Scientist

A leading scientist in his field with over 25 years professional employment and research experience in invertebrate ecology, subterranean ecosystems, troglofauna, stygofauna, caves and karst. Stefan is the founding Director of Subterranean Ecology and Senior Principal Scientist.


Stefan Eberhard

Dr Anita Lyons BSc PhD

Senior Scientist

Has 14 years experience in agricultural entomology, quarantine surveillance and invertebrate ecology. Her expertise includes arboreal and terrestrial invertebrates, identification of native and exotic invertebrates, quarantine and collection management. Prior to joining Subterranean Ecology Anita worked variously with CSIRO National Insect Collection, the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service, and the Department of Agriculture.


Shae Callan BSc (Hons) BSocSci

Senior Scientist

An experienced scientist and environmental consultant with 8 years in invertebrate ecology since graduating from Curtin University with a double degree in Geography and Environmental Biology (First class Honours). Shae has managed many challenging projects involving both short range endemic (SRE) terrestrial invertebrates and subterranean fauna. Prior to joining Subterranean Ecology, Shae worked for 4 years on the Barrow Island Invertebrate Survey undertaken by Curtin University for Chevron Australia.


Natasha Coen Bsc (Hons) PhD candidate

Senior Scientist

An experienced environmental consultant who has managed numerous subterranean fauna surveys and impact assessments, her skills include project management, GIS mapping, statistical analyses, field surveys, report writing and invertebrate identification. Tash graduated with a double degree in Marine Science (First class Honours) and Biological Science, with a minor in Statistics and is close to submitting her PhD on aquatic invertebrate ecology.


Giulia Perina BSc MSc

Senior Scientist

A dedicated scientist and speleologist with 3 years consulting experience and particular expertise in invertebrate identification, para-taxonomy, photo-microscopy, data management and field survey. Giulia completed her MSc on subterranean beetles at University of Padua, Italy. 


Karin Eriksson BSc MSc PhD candidate

Scientist

Has 7 years experience in aquatic ecology with specific expertise in subterranean ecology, identification and para-taxonomy of subterranean crustaceans. She is experienced in project management and impact assessment, field surveys, survey design and GIS mapping. Karin is currently finalizing her PhD on the stygofauna of Ireland undertaken at the University of Ulster.


Peter Bell 

Senior Field & Technical Manager

Has over 20 years experience in operational management, remote area field surveys, information technology, hardware / software, graphic design and GIS mapping. Pete has particular expertise in cave management, cave tourism development and show cave lighting systems. Prior to joining Subterranean Ecology, Pete was Caves Manager with the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association, Western Australia.


Steven Catomore

Field, Technical & Safety Officer

Has 4 years diverse experience in technical roles spanning the environmental consulting and resource sectors. He has undertaken many successful field surveys and is particularly experienced in remote area operations, safety, logistics and camp management. Prior to joining Subterranean Ecology, Steve was employed as Senior Geological, Environment & Heritage Technician on the Tropicana Project in the Great Victoria Desert, Western Australia.


Christine Cocks

Chief Administration Officer

Chris over 40 years experience in secretarial and executive administration roles in business including mining and resources.

Finance Officer
Paul has over 20 years experience in business accounting and project management including the mining and resources sector in Australia and internationally.
